Dressage is a path and destination of competitive horse training. Its fundamental purpose is to develop, through standardized progressive training methods, a horse's natural athletic ability and willingness to perform, thereby maximizing its potential as a riding horse. At the peak of a dressage horse's gymnastic development, it can smoothly respond to a skilled rider's minimal aids by performing the requested movement while remaining relaxed and appearing effortless. Dressage is occasionally referred to as "Horse Ballet" Dressage was first recognized as an important equestrian pursuit in the West during the Renaissance. The great European riding masters of that period developed a sequential training system that has changed little since then. Classical dressage is still considered the basis of modern dressage.

"If training has not made a horse more beautiful, nobler in carriage, more attentive in his behavior, revealing pleasure in his own accomplishment...then he has not truly been schooled in dressage."
~Col. Handler

"There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man."
~Winston Churchill

"Many people have sighed for the 'good old days' and regretted the 'passing of the horse,' but today, when only those who like horses own them, it is a far better time for horses."
~C.W. Anderson

No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle.
~Winston Churchill

A horse which stops dead just before a jump and thus propels its rider into a graceful arc provides a splendid excuse for general merriment.
~Duke of Endindurgh

On horseback he seemed to require as many hands as a Hindu god, at least four for clutching the reins, and two more for patting the horse soothingly
on the neck.
~SAKI

Horse, thou art truly a creature without equal, for thou fliest without wings and conquerest without sword.
~The Koran

A man on a horse is spiritually as well as physically bigger than a man on foot.
~John Steinbeck

Certain comic effects can be achieved by a brand-new rider, especially a man who dresses like a fashion model and rides like a tailor.
~C.J.J. Mullen

Show me your horse and I will tell you who you are.
~Old English Saying

First, you must trust in yourself. Then you can also trust in the earth or gravity of a situation, and because of that, you can uplift yourself. At that point, your discipline becomes delightful rather than being an ordeal or a great demand. When you ride a horse, balance comes, not from freezing your legs to the saddle, but from learning to float with the movement of the horse as you ride. Each step is a dance, the rider's dance as well as the dance of the horse.
~Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, "Shambala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior"
